Weekly wrap-up: Sunday night edition

I know, I know. It took me a while to get the weekly wrap-up posted here on GameZone. But what could you expect? Featuring a ton of accessibility and some neat extras, this HD remake of a Saturn classic shines through and through.

FTL: Faster Than Light review (PC)

Addictive, engaging, and captivating — this game’s spirit proves that simplicity can often be infused into the utmost incredible of games.

Taken 2 review (Movies)

It may not be very smart – in fact, it’s quite stupid – but this follow-up to Taken can still provide plenty of enjoyment for the appropriate audience.

Frankenweenie review (Movies)

Tim Burton’s latest is hardly all that exciting, but it’s rife with enough of the filmmaker’s personality to make it worthwhile.

Frank O' Connor: Xbox 360 isn't nearing end of its life cycle

Despite wide speculation that the next generation of consoles are set to be unveiled in the coming months, with a possible 2014 launch, some still fully believe that this generation still has much to offer to its users, including 343 Industries’ Frank O’ Connor.

In a thorough interview with GamesIndustry.biz, O’ Connor was asked if he believed the Xbox 360 was at the end of its lifestyle, in which he responded interestingly:

"The funny thing is I've been asked that question a lot, I think it's natural as we start looking forward to the next generation of hardware. But I would actually strongly contest the fact that the Xbox 360 is at the end of its life cycle, this has already been one of the longest generations and there's a really good reason for it, which is that current consoles are incredibly flexible and still really powerful. The reason that Halo 4 looks good is that that machine has an awful lot of untapped power still and it's going to continue to."

O’Connor went on to praise Microsoft’s push to turn the 360 into a full fledged media console where gamers can enjoy their favorite titles, listen to their music, and view their favorite movies and TV shows. He also believes that consumers are not ready to invest in a $500 console, especially those who currently own consoles only for the media aspect of it.

We now turn to you, the readers. Do you believe we’re ready for a new set of consoles from Sony and Microsoft, or do you stand on the side of Mr. Frank O’ Connor? Let us know by commenting below.

First look at Desmond in Assassin's Creed 3?

Although much has been said of Desmond Mile's fate in the upcoming Assassin's Creed 3, most of the footage and screenshots shown to fans to date have been of new series protagonist Connor who exists in the Animus. And even though it has been said that Desmond's role in Assassin's Creed 3 is actually much larger than in the past, with his storyline allegedly concluding in this game, much of the emphasis has been placed on the new setting, time period, and character.

A few days ago, however, we may have received our first look at Desmond in Assassin's Creed 3. Posted on the Assassin's Creed Chile Facebook, the image shows Team Animus — Desmond along with Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings — in the Holy Temple. It hasn't been verified, but the group is "pretty sure" it's completely official.

Reactions to the image have been mixed so far, but what do you think?

Resident Evil 6 ships 4.5M worldwide series 'just as popular,' says Capcom

The critically troubled Resident Evil 6 has shipped 4.5 million copies worldwide, according to publisher and developer Capcom.

Resident Evil 6 hit shelves on October 2 and today in Japan. A PC date has yet to be confirmed, but the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are hanging on to 67 and 77 percent aggregate scores on Metacritic, respectively.

It's important to note that shipping figures are not the same as sales numbers, though. Capcom did reveal that the series to date has sold over 50 million units — but that's as of June 30, which is well before the release of the latest game but after the March debut of Operation Raccoon City, which wasn't so hotly received, either. (Both console versions have a 52/100 score on Metacritic.)

Given the scores those recent two games, we're not sure we agree with Capcom when it told the press, "These sales figures demonstrate that Resident Evil is just as popular today as it was 15 years ago."

We gave the PlayStation 3 version a 6.5 in our review.

Assassin's Creed 3 Season Pass unveiled, includes 'Tyranny of King Washington' campaign

Ubisoft has officially detailed the Assassin's Creed 3 Season Pass, an offer that grants access to all five upcoming downloadable content packs for a discounted price.

Assassin's Creed 3's DLC will feature "The Tyranny of King Washington", an all-new single player campaign told through three episodic content packs that lets you experience an alternate history of the events following the American Revolution.

As the revolution comes to a close, a new and most unexpected enemy emerges. Driven by the desire to secure the fate of the colonies, the greatest hero of the revolution, George Washington, succumbs to the temptation of infinite power. The new King is born and his reign leaves no one untouched. To return freedom to the land our new hero must dethrone a tyrant he once called friend.

“History is our playground – and AC teams have always loved playing with historical facts and their consequences as a way to better understand a time period,” said Ubisoft Executive Producer Sebastien Puel. “While Assassin’s Creed 3 concentrates on history as it happens, we wanted to take some liberties with this DLC and tell you how things ‘could have happened.’”

In addition to this alternate reality, the Assassin's Creed 3 downloadable content will also include new maps and characters for its expansive multiplayer system.

The Assassin’s Creed 3 Season Pass will be available for purchase for 2400 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE or $29.99 on the PlayStation Network. It will be released within six months after the game's launch on October 30. It will save you 25% over the individual pack prices and also give you access to the first downloadable content pack one week before other gamers. Assassin's Creed 3's DLC will also be available for the Wii U version of the game when it releases alongside the console on November 18.

Terraria trailer on Facebook makes me want to buy the game again

You know what game I can't wait to buy for the second time? Terraria. Yup, I'm really looking forward to the upcoming console version due out on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Thus far, the console version, which is being handled by 505 Games, has received a mixed reaction from gamers. The same fans who supported the game are now bashing it because the sense of entitlement runs through their veins like a bad infection.

In any case, there are a few level-headed people who are saying that the game should definitely be available to a wider audience. I'm with those not-so-jerky folks.

A new trailer was released to promote the console version of Terraria. You can check it out on Facebook. It's pretty rad. Oh, and in case you weren't aware, there's extra content coming to the console version, which as you've probably guessed by now, has resulted in even more b*tching from the "fans."

Ugh ... People make my head hurt. In any case, I can't wait to play Terraria again!

Capcom likens Resident Evil devs and fans to parents of a child

The gaming industry is interesting to say the least. Plenty of entertainment industries have outspoken followers, but gaming is one of the few where can have a direct impact in the development of a project. Just look at Mass Effect 3 and the chaos that ensued following fan outrage over the game's ending. Fan pressure led to the creation of an entirely new DLC pack. Ask yourself, what other industry do consumers have that kind of power?

The Resident Evil franchise is one in particular in which the fanbase feels particularly close to, and one that has undergone tremendous changes since it originally debuted for PlayStation back in 1996 — much to the dismay of fans of the original. Nevertheless, the Resident Evil fanbase is a loyal one that continues to trust in Capcom despite several lackluster titles in the past few years.

Resident Evil 6 is no exception to the rule. Leading up to its release today, Resident Evil 6 has received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. While some approve of the change in direction Resident Evil seems to be headed in, others feel it is an abomination to what the series once was. How does Capcom win? Can they win?

When asked by Sony if it's frustrating to keep fans happy, Resident Evil executive producer Kobayashi-san likened the relationship to that of two parents caring for a child. A weird, but oddly fitting analogy.

"The way I always think of it is that if Resident Evil represents a child, then the fans and us as creators are the two parents. The resulting games are like the children that are born between both of us," Kobayashi-san explained. "And just like real parents, you’re not always going to agree on what is best for raising that child."

Even now, fans can't agree on what's best for Resident Evil. Should it continue down this action shooter route or return to its roots of survival-horror? Whatever it is fans are saying, Capcom is definitely paying attention...or so they say.

"Now, we do always have our ear to the ground and listen to what the fans are saying and we try to take that into account when we’re making the game," he added. "But it’s our job to create a new gaming experience and to offer them something that’s fresh and challenging. We want to make sure that what we do pleases them but the initial reaction might not always be positive."

"We do listen to the fans but we can’t be beholden to them at every turn or I don’t think we’ll ever make progress in terms of the series’ development," he concluded.

Resident Evil 6 just released today for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Although we found the game to be an "unremarkable 3rd person shooter", we can suggest giving it a try if you and a buddy are interested.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Khyber Strike DLC adds new 'Takeover' game mode

Ubisoft announced the upcoming arrival of the Khyber Strike, the third DLC package for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The new add-on will feature three new multiplayer maps, a new multiplayer game mode called "Takeover", a new Guerrilla mode co-op map, new achievements, and an increased level cap.

Similar to the classic team deathmatch, Takeover has you score points for your team by eliminating enemies. However, you can tip the scales by taking control of the enemy's objective and earn a score multiplier to your team. You'll also need to defend your team's objective to prevent the enemy team from getting the same advantage. The team with the highest score at the end of the mission wins.

Three new multiplayer maps have also been added, as well as a new Guerilla Mode map. The details are below:

Khyber Strike is set to release on October 9 for Xbox 360 (800 Microsoft Points) and PS3 ($9.99). It will be available on PC at a later date.

You can 'teabag' in Halo 4's Mantis

Today, 343 Industries officially confirmed the reimagined version of Valhalla (Halo 3) in their upcoming blockbuster, Halo 4, as “Ragnarok.” In the trailer they released of the map, 343 also introduced the Mantis: a sick-nasty mech-vehicle that stomps on things.

Better yet, we learned that you’ll be able to make the mech teabag other players whenever you score a kill on them. As you know, Halo fans take their teabagging very seriously, so all will welcome this news, surely.

Left 4 Dead series is 12 million strong

The Left 4 Dead series has sold more than 12 million copies.

Valve writer Chet Faliszek revealed the sales figure in an interview with VG24/7.

"We just let the game speak for itself because the Internet has made this thing where you can’t pull the wool over people’s eyes any more," said Faliszek. "They’re going to know you’re hyping. But when a game does really well at prerelease, they're going to know that you’re not just talking a bunch of PR crap.

"That’s amazingly cool," he said, "and that wasn’t because I was out there like, ‘Oh my god! This game is amazing! Buy it!’"

The series consists of two games and the sequel's various add-ons, including "The Passing" and "The Sacrifice."

Michael Jordan returns in new NBA 2K13 'Dynasty' TV Spot

Legendary basketball star Michael Jordan returns in the latest NBA 2K13 TV spot. With NBA 2K13 set to release tomorrow, October 2, 2012, 2K Games is ramping up its advertising which means you'll probably see more of this trailer.

This isn't the first time we've heard Jordan in an NBA 2K13 commercial. Back in July, Air Jordan introduced Jay-Z as NBA 2K13's executive producer. This also isn't the last we'll see of him. This year, players are able to play with the entire 1992 Dream Team featuring Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and tons of other iconic basketball stars.

There's still a few more hours until the release of NBA 2K13 so for now just sit back, enjoy the soothing voice of His Airness, and think about the great matchup you'll soon be able to play between the 1992 Dream Team and the 2012 Olympic Team.

Halo 4's Promethean weaponry shown off in new video

343 Industries has released a new trailer highlighting the Promethean weaponry in Halo 4. Although we've already known the types of weapons and their specs for quite a while now, this video gives us an official look at the deadly Promethean weapons in action. Some of the weapons you'll see include the Scattershot, the Light Rifle, the Suppressor, and the powerful Incinerator Cannon.

You can find these weapons from the new enemy race, the Prometheans. We don't know much about them, except that they are considered to be a "threat beyond anything that Master Chief has faced before". A brief look at how these weapons operate will show you why.

Then again, I don't think Master Chief has ever faced dubstep before, and that's exactly what else this trailer has. Today's trailer will also give you a look at two multiplayer maps: Solace and Complex. 343 Industries has previously previewed both the UNSC weapons as well as the Covenant's weapons.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis team up in what can best be described as a smart and rich sci-fi flick.

Way of the Samurai 4 review (PS3)

It’s not without a few flaws, but this samurai-themed action-adventure experience is hilarious and entertaining to play.
