Bethesda explains the concept behind Skyrim 'Hearthfire' add-on

When Skyrim's Hearthfire add-on was announced earlier this week, I teased that it would turn your Elder Scrolls V game into The Sims. The new add-on, which will release for a modest 400 Microsoft Points ($5.00), adds the option for players to build a custom house and start a family. It's a huge feature, but not something I ever would've imagined would be released. So what was the concept behind it?

Bethesda has released a new Skyrim team diary detailing the creative process of developing Hearthfire and how the idea came to fruition. Similar to Dawnguard, Hearthfire was first showcased in Bethesda Game Studios' first-ever "Game Jam", a week-long exercise where members of the team shared in-game ideas for expanding Skyrim.

As explained in the post, lead designer Bruce Nesmith approached environmental artist Robert Wisnewski to help create something "different" form what he traditionally does as a designer. Wisnewski was "inspired to expand upon the game's housing options in large part because of his enthusiasm for Skyrim's crafting systems".

"It started as a small idea to expand on the crafting element of the game because alchemy, smithing and enchanting were things I was interested in when we were playtesting the game," Wisnewski explained. Although the feature showed off at Game Jame was relatively simple — a small cabin that included a forge for players to create objects that would then become a part of the house — the team loved the idea.

Co-lead designer Kurt Kuhlmann began working on it after the Game Jam on his own time and both he and Wisnewski continue to add to it.

"We even were able to add a wine cellar!" Wisnewski said. "Anything you can think of that you'd want to have in a Skyrim house is here."

That includes the option to have kids. That's right, in Hearthfire, you can expand upon your family and adopt children which you must help raise.

"The idea of adoption came to me after the Dark Brotherhood questline was presented," Level designer Steve Cornett recalled. "After first seeing the [Innocence Lost] questline, I asked, ‘what happens to the kids? What happens to the orphanage after the quest is completed?'"

"Steve did a great job designing the adoption [system] and making kids in the game really come to life," Nesmith added. "Simple things like having them ask for money or playing a game with them. While these things don't necessarily have implications to my character's adventure, they do make the children feel so much more alive."

"The actual scope of Hearthfire blows me away. It's one thing to say you're going to add these things, and it's another to see a small team build something that's so complex and rigorous and have all those pieces, " concluded Nesmith.

Hearthfire is set to release on Xbox 360 on September 4. No PC or PS3 dates have been announced. PS3 users are still awaiting Dawnguard, which has been available on Xbox 360 and PC for quite a while now, but it looks like it may never make it to Sony's console. Yesterday, Bethesda admitted their struggles with bringing Dawnguard to PS3 is "not a problem we're positive we can solve", but assured fans they are working hard with Sony to bring the content to PS3.

Bastion is now playable on iPad

The hit indie game Bastion is now available on iPad.

Supergiant Games' popular title came out last year to critical acclaim. The trailer below shows how this new version "reimagines the play experience to work intuitively using the iPad’s touch screen."

According to Supergiant's blog, "Touch anywhere on the screen to move to that point, or press and hold onscreen to make the Kid move in that direction. Double-tap to perform a quick Evasive Roll. The Kid will attack automatically when foes or obstacles get in range. You can manually fire certain weapons and can also use the Bullhead Shield to defend, or use a Secret Skill to quickly dispatch foes. You can carry two weapons at a time and freely switch between the two at the touch of a button."

Players can switch to Classic controls at any time.

Bastion costs $4.99 in the App Store. It supports Retina display and is compatible with iOS 5.1 or higher. It features a leaderboard and more than 20 Game Center achievements.

The game also includes the "Stranger's Dream" sequence, which was released post-launch as a downloadable extra. Other small tweaks were made to the version.

NHL 13 Legends

"With the release of NHL 12 we added generic female characters in our Be a Pro mode based on a request from a 14-yr old female fan who emailed our staff because she felt underrepresented as a hockey videogame fan," EA Sports general manager Dean Richards said.

"This year we are very excited to continue our effort of creating a more representative experience for female hockey fans by adding two of the greatest female athletes to ever play the game in Wickenheiser and Ruggiero to NHL 13."

Black Ops 2: Nuketown Zombies not included with standard pre-order bonus

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2's Nuketown Zombies mode will not be included with pre-orders of the standard game, Activision clarified today.

Looking to clear up any confusion, Call of Duty community manager Liam Ashley confirmed on Twitter that pre-ordering the standard game will only give you access to the Nuketown 2025 multiplayer map — NOT the Nuketown Zombies mode that was revealed as part of the Collector Editions of Black Ops 2.

Available only as part of the Collector Editions — Care Package, Hardened Edition, or Digital Deluxe Edition — Nuketown Zombies will have you defend against hordes of zombies on the beloved 1960s nuclear neighborhood.

The standard Nuketown 2025 map, included when just pre-ordering the regular standalone game, will only allow you to play the standard multiplayer gameplay on a re-imagined version of the 1960s neighborhood.

Klei Entertainment, the studio responsible for Shank and Mark of the Ninja, is developing a new game called Don't Starve.

Of course, you can buy your way into the current beta for $6.99. By doing so, you'll also receive an extra key for a friend. Don't Starve will launch for $15, so this is the better deal if you're already interested.

David Bateson returns to voice Agent 47 in Hitman: Absolution

Square Enix announced today that David Bateson will return to reprise his role of Agent 47 in Hitman: Absolution.

Bateson, who has been the voice of Hitman since the year 2000 with the PC release of Codename 47, was selected after a long search by developer IO Interactive.

“IO and Bateson have been bed fellows for over a decade and like all long running relationships sometimes absence makes the heart grow fonder," brand director Jon Brooke said about the decision to bring Bateson back after the studio earlier said he would be the voice of Agent 47 in Hitman: Absolution. "Looking back I think we were just playing hard to get.”

William Mapother, of hit TV series LOST, has performed the motion capture work for Agent 47. Both Bateson and Mapother now join a long list of talented cast members which includes Marsha Thomason, Keith Carradine, Vivica Fox, Shannyn Sossamon and Powers Boothe.

Hitman: Absolution is set to release globally on November 20, 2012 for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Happy Wars will be Xbox 360's first free-to-play game, supported by microtransactions

With Sony already on the free-to-play bandwagon with Dust 514, Microsoft is just hopping on. The platform holder revealed today that upcoming multiplayer action game Happy Wars will be the first free-to-play title on Xbox 360.

Releasing on Xbox LIVE Arcade this fall, Happy Wars will be free to download and play for Xbox LIVE Gold members. The game will use a microtransaction system where players will be able to purchase "lavishly rendered items" to customize their character's appearance.

The large-scale multiplayer action game, which allows for up to 30 players to battle online in exciting castle sieges, is being developed by Japanese studio Toylogic. Following its launch in fall, Microsoft has promised to support the game with additional items and character options. It's likely players will have to pay for these additional options.

While Happy Wars will be the first title on Xbox 360 to use the free-to-play business model, it certainly won't be the last. Signal Studios' action title Ascend: New Gods, which is coming next year, will also be free-to-play.

It's clear that free-to-play, microtransaction-based games are going to be the future moving forward — or at least have a major foothold in the game industry.

But how will the community react to it? I haven't yet played Happy Wars, but the big thing developers must avoid is campy game design that free-to-play titles tend to fall into it. Will Happy Wars set free-to-play off on the right foot?

Halo 4 'Spartan Ops' to be longer than Halo: ODST campaign

If Master Chief’s return in Halo 4 won’t satisfy your Halo addiction, expect the title’s multiplayer episodic series “Spartan Ops” to do just that. The 10 TV-style episodes following the launch of Halo 4 will not only present you with a whole other story in the Halo universe, it’ll lengthen your playtime by…oh…the time it took you to complete Halo: ODST’s campaign.

Posting as “lybertyboy” on NeoGaf, Spartan Ops gameplay designer David Ellis stated, “SpOps season alone is longer than ODST.” He also added that there are two entirely separate teams working on “SpOps” and the full-fledged single-player campaign that will be available day one.

Ellis’ response on the forum was sparked by 343 mastermind Frank O’ Conner’s post to fans after receiving much criticism on their unveiled achievements list. The list, which follows its predecessors with mission-by-mission “cheevos,” led some to believe that the game would be far shorter than past titles. O’Conner was quick to respond, simply stating, "Number of missions has no bearing on the length of the campaign. It's a Halo sized campaign. PLUS Spops etc."

All signs thus far point to a 15-20 hour experience between the single-player AND Spartan Ops mode, which should be quite welcomed by series fanatics. What are your thoughts on the potential length of the upcoming blockbuster? Let us know by commenting below.

The Raven is King ART's next adventure game

Developer King ART successfully delivered a legitimately entertaining and pleasantly comical adventure gaming experience with The Book of Unwritten Tales. The game, which had been available in Europe for some time, recently launched in North America, and it was met with wide critical acclaim. Now, King ART is working on its next project, which was announced at this year's Gamescom.

The Raven takes place in 1960s Europe and follows the tale of the titular bandit. You'll have to keep a close eye for The Raven's signature black feather clues and seize him and the stolen Eye of the Spinx.

Check out the trailer below for a glimpse of The Raven. Unlike The Book of Unwritten Tales, it doesn't seem like this will be a lighthearted tale rife with hilarious characters. Instead, The Raven takes a more serious approach at its storytelling, and it'll be interesting seeing King ART deliver something fairly different from its latest success.

Watch out for The Raven sometime in 2013. The game is scheduled to land on PC, Mac, and consoles.

I Am Alive is coming to PC this fall

I Am Alive, Ubisoft's survival horror game that previously released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, is arriving on PC on September 13.

The game hit XBLA in March and PSN one month later. It holds a score of 75 on Metacritic. Let's see how how the PC version will do.

In November of last year, creative director Stanislas Mettra expressed concerns about the game coming to the PC platform.

"We've heard loud and clear that PC gamers are bitching about there being no version for them," the developer told IncGamers. "But are these people just making noise just because there's no version or because it's a game they actually want to play? Would they buy it if we made it?"

Afterward, Mettra contacted IncGamers and said he was "misunderstood." His email is no longer available to read on the website, so make of it what you will.

The game is scheduled for PC now, so whether or not Mettra was quoted in earnest, there's now an audience for I Am Alive on PC.

Dance Central 3 Story mode detailed, 9 new tracks revealed

Harmonix today released new details for Dance Central 3's newly revealed Story mode, but I'm sure the majority of you care about what songs you can bump and grind to when it releases later this year.

For that, I will first give you the nine new tracks you can shake your booty to. With more than 40 tracks on disc, the nine tracks today represent only a small portion of the songs in Dance Central 3. Below are nine more songs, each with authentic dance routines created by professional choreographers:

Now onto Story mode where you will travel back in time to learn classic dance moves alongside your favorite crews and characters. Playable solo or cooperatively, you will join the ranks of Dance Central Intelligence to uncover a dastardly plot to destroy Dance Central. For some reason, in order to destroy Dr. Tan, you must learn the iconic dance moves from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and today. How learning dance moves from the past can possibly put an end to Dr. Tan's villainy is beyond me, but I suppose it gives you purpose to dance to Disco Inferno.

In addition to all this great info, Harmonix also revealed that dance crew Riptide’s Bodie and Emilia have been drafted by Dance Central Intelligence to take down Dr. Tan and his army! There are a ton of new crews and characters in Dance Central 3 and to help you learn more about all of the new looks, era-specific venues, and characters, Harmonix has released the third Dance Central 3 developer diary.

Make It So: Farsight Studios Launches KickStarter For Star Trek: TNG Pinball Table

A couple of months back, Farsight Studios, the creators of the hit downloadable game The Pinball Arcade, launched a successful KickStarter campaign that brought the classic The Twilight Zone table to digital form, with its release scheduled for later this year.  Now, they're "engaging" once more with an all new KickStarter, this time for one of the better licensed tables on the market.

Produced by Williams in 1993, Star Trek: The Next Generation features familiar music and voice samples from the classic TV show, including plenty of Picard for you ladies that couldn't get enough of them.  Farsight is gunning to raise the money for the licensing fees to get the table made into The Pinball Arcade, making it available for a number of platforms, including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS Vita and mobile devices, among others.

The goal they're shooting for is $45,000, and so far, they're over $18,000, with around 20-something days to go.  So, with enough Trekkies (and pinball enthusiasts) backing the game, Farsight should have no problem in "making it so".

As with its previous KickStarter, Farsight is offering a number of awards for certain donaters, including a digital copy of the game upon its release, a special "pro" edition with additional perks, a signed copy of the previously released Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection, and even a pinball party for you and your friends, provided you pick the top tier award.  C'mon, you have that cash lying around, don't you?

Want to take part?  Simply head over to this offiical KickStarter link to donate and make Star Trek: The Next Generation happen.  Hey, who knows, if this is successful, they might just pursue The Addams Family table next.  Maybe.

Capcom wants to make Remember Me 'a major franchise'

This week at Gamescom, Capcom introduced Remember Me, a new action-adventure game coming for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC from Dontnod Entertainment. Capcom senior producer Mat Hart said the publisher wants multiple games from Dontnod — a whole franchise, actually.

"We're looking to build a long-lasting relationship with them as a developer, and build this into a major franchise," Hart told Joystiq.

Capcom is looking at a May 2013 release window. "The thing is," said Hart, "if you leave it too late into next year, then you are starting to straddle that line where you're starting to move into the next-generation consoles. And what we want to do is make sure we launch this on the current generation of consoles, to really sell it in and establish it as a new IP. And then build the franchise out in line with the new consoles coming out."

Do you think Capcom is making a prudent decision releasing the game earlier rather than later?

Warren Spector Wants the Original Epic Mickey Released On Xbox 360, PS3

Warren Spector and his team at Junction Point are toiling away on the highly anticipated Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, bringing the series to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for the first time.  But that isn't stopping him from thinking…why didn't the original game ever make it to the system?

Apparently Spector is wishing that the original Epic Mickey could still make the journey.  Speaking with Joystiq today, Spector stated, "It's been about four or five days since I've asked to get that project greenlit. It's not my call to make. I can't even tell you how much I want to see the first game with all the enhancements and improvements we've made on Xbox 360 and PS3."

"Just have all of your readers send emails to Disney corporation and say: 'Warren should make this game.'"

Now, Warren HAS suggested the idea before, but the response was rather interesting.  "There's only so much clout," said Spector. "When you're talking about the kind of money games cost now, there's only so much you can do."

Still, you can put in your request by sending Disney an email or bugging them on Twitter.  (https://twitter.com/Disney)

Meanwhile, watch out for Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two (as well as its 3DS spin-off Power of Illusion) on November 18.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 confirmed for PC

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will release for PC as well as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, confirmed Konami. The game will release sometime next year.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow successfully rebooted the franchise," said producer Dave Cox, "but now we want to go further and exceed people’s expectations on what to expect from the sequel.

“This new game tells a much broader tale, and one that spans centuries. It is a game that pushes whatever format it is on to the absolute limit, and we are delighted that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2’s rich blend of first-class fighting, deep exploration, and rich storytelling are set to delight and enthrall PC users, too."

MercurySteam is developing the PC version in house. The company is also busy making Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate for the 3DS.

NBA 2K13 to feature 2012 USA basketball mens national team

2K Sports today announced that you'll not only be able to play as the 2012 USA Basketball Men's National Team but the 1992 "Dream Team" as well in NBA 2K13. Nice! Now if only the Looney Tunes we're available as playable characters, I could recreate my favorite Space Jam moments!

“As executive producer, letting fans go head to head with these legendary USA teams was extremely important to JAY Z,” said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “We are excited to partner with USA Basketball, and share in JAY Z’s enthusiasm in making this a reality in NBA 2K13.”

The original 'Dream Team' featured Hall of Fame players including Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, David Robinson and Charles Barkley.

“The experience we shared in Barcelona is truly one of the highlights of my career,” said five-time NBA MVP and former NBA 2K cover athlete Michael Jordan. “Being able to represent not only my country but basketball as a whole is an honor that I will never forget.”

Kevin Durant also helped lead USA to its successful showing and will be joining the elite list of accomplished basketball players.

“It was an incredible blessing to have been part of the 2012 USA Basketball National Team,” said Durant. “USA Basketball's National Team legacy is incredible and so many of basketball’s all-time greats have been part of it, I’m just honored to be in that group. Like everybody, I can’t wait to see how our squad stacks up against the 1992 team in NBA 2K13.”

You can look out for NBA 2K13 to his store shelves on October 2nd in North America, and October 5th internationally on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two trailer showcases forgotten characters

I'm super excited for Epic Mickey 2. It's pretty much everything I could have wanted in the original and more. From finally being multiplatform, to adding the ability to play co-op, not to mention it's a musical!

In this latest trailer, we get a glimpse at some of the characters in the game, including Oswald and what makes playing as him a completely unique experience. Mickey is armed with the magic brush allowing to paint or use paint thinner, while Oswald has a remote control which allows him to power certain things in the world.

The development team wanted to stay true to the source material and include some iconic characters in the game. Ortensia the Cat will be making a much larger appearance in Epic Mickey 2, rather than just being a mentioned character.

The Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two video game returns Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Wasteland, an alternate world filled with more than 80 years of forgotten Disney characters and theme park attractions.  But for the first time, Mickey and Oswald will join forces as true partners - Mickey with the magical paint brush that allows him to wield paint and thinner, and Oswald with a powerful remote control that allows him to command electricity.   This new co-op play further enhances the idea that "PlayStyle Matters" - a unique approach to gameplay pioneered by Warren Spector where players tackle challenges the way they want to in order to explore a variety of possibilities and storylines, but always with consequences for their chosen actions.

Alien Spidy spins its web in North America this fall

Kalypso Media has announced that it will be bringing its web-swinging 2D platformer, Alien Spidy, to digital download platforms this fall. The game features colorful graphics that almost resemble a more lighthearted Outland-esque art style and over 60 levels of challenging platforming gameplay.

I had the chance to play Alien Spidy at E3 a couple of months ago, and I instantly fell in love with it. The game is incredibly charming, but don't let that charm fool you. Alien Spidy is a tough game, and it will provide players with a satisfyingly punishing experience. Because easy games are for suckers!

Watch out for Alien Spidy in a few months. You'll be able to download the game on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, PC, and Mac. To get an in-depth look at Alien Spidy, check out our preview from E3.

Check out some b*tchin' Sacred Citadel screens

Damn it, now I can't stop using the word "bitchin'." Thanks a lot, Deep Silver! Well, as long as I'm using that ridiculously awesome word and blaming video game publishers for it, I might as well inform you that some new screens for the upcoming Sacred Citadel have popped up.

For now, we've just got this small batch of five images, but that's certain to change down the road. I dig what I'm seeing as the art style in Sacred Citadel is nice and colorful. Because seriously, I don't play video games to look at drab environments.

Developed by Southend Interactive, Sacred Citadel takes place before the next main entry in the franchise, Sacred 3. The downloadable game will feature fast-paced beat 'em up action for up to three players and it will throw in some RPG elements for good measure.

You'll have to wait until 2013 to play Sacred Citadel, so for now, check out the reveal trailer and these sexy screens. Watch out for the game on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 multiplayer revealed with new trailer

The much-anticipated trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has finally arrived! And boy does it not disappoint. It is the year 2025 after all, so the technology has to reflect that. We get a glimpse of some sweet new gadgetry you'll be able to use in multiplayer matches.

The first involved a throwing knife with a grenade attached to the end of it. Missed that throw by a hair? No big deal, let the explosion get the kill. The next gadget we saw was the infra-sensor scope, which will show enemy positions behind solid objects or through heavy smoke.

One of the other more impressive toys is the one deployed on the bridge, which looks like it will slow enemies down, making them an easy kill. And let's not forget the crowd favorite, the infamour AR Drone, which is also controllable, letting you pick off enemies from the sky.

Need some heavier firepower? Then the mech shown off in the trailer should do the job. It looks to be a powerhouse of both armor and firepower, letting you get deep into enemy fire and taking out the opposition.

For those that like to keep it old school, you can rest easy knowing that knifing, and tomahawks to the face are still a thing in Black Ops 2.

So what did you think? Was the wait worth it for this little tease? Now you just have to wait until November 13th until the game hits store shelves.

Left 4 Dead 2 runs faster on Steam Linux

Valve, which is working on a Linux version of their popular Steam distribution service, has found that Left 4 Dead 2 runs slightly faster on the operating system than it does Windows.

"After this work, Left 4 Dead 2 is running at 315 [frames per second, or FPS] on Linux," the team wrote on its blog. "That the Linux version runs faster than the Windows version (270.6 [FPS]) seems a little counter-intuitive, given the greater amount of time we have spent on the Windows version. However, it does speak to the underlying efficiency of the kernel and OpenGL.

"Interestingly, in the process of working with hardware vendors we also sped up the OpenGL implementation on Windows. Left 4 Dead 2 is now running at 303.4 FPS with that configuration."

The company believes this breakthrough shows the benefits of close coordination between software and hardware developers, bringing new value to the Linux community.

Valve plans to launch other games on the platform, including Serious Sam 3: BFE. No release date has been set for Steam Linux.

Sorry Lions fans, John Madden himself has just cursed your Madden NFL 13 cover athlete

Sorry Lions fans, but consider Calvin Johnson's season over before it even started.

As if being voted on the cover of this year's Madden NFL 13 wasn't bad enough, legendary NFL player, coach, announcer, and appointed-curse has just jinxed Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

Speaking to the Detroit Free Press, John Madden said the Madden NFL game franchise is not "cursed" despite the string of injuries, contract disputes, and overall down seasons that hit the players who have been featured on the cover of the games throughout the past 13 years.

"I was on the cover for several years, and I never once even pulled a hamstring," joked Madden.

"It's a violent sport. Injuries are going to happen," he defended. And then he dropped the Madden bomb.

"If there was such a thing [as a curse], you couldn't ask for a better man to prove that wrong than who we've got this year," he stated, challenging and effectively cursing him.

"He might be as close to indestructible as we've ever had on the cover. Maybe I shouldn't say that...that might...I'm not going to talk about that any more."

Are you kidding me, John!? You already did! The only thing more powerful than the cover of Madden NFL is John Madden, himself.

Let's just see how "indestructible" Calvin Johnson will be...

SoulCalibur V fails to outsell predecessor

SoulCalibur V has sold about a million copies less than SoulCalibur IV, Namco Bandai revealed in its Q1 financial report.

The current sales, as of June 30, 2012, stands at 1.38 million copies after six months. In comparison, SoulCalibur IV managed to sell 2.3 million sales after eight months on sale.

It must be disheartening to Namco, especially considering the generally favorable reception it received from critics. GameZone's Andrew Clouther scored it an impressive 8/10, citing impressive gameplay and character creation, but disappointing story.

While it seems SoulCalibur V was a step in the right direction for the franchise, are its sales going to be enough to convince Namco to create another? Or have wee seen the last SoulCalibur?

Conan O'Brien adventures in Skyrim during his 'Clueless Gamer' segment

Conan O'Brien's "Clueless Gamer" segment is simply brilliant. For those unfamiliar, during this bit, the late night host, who has no video game knowledge whatsoever, tackles some of the industry's biggest titles and slaps a meaningless rating on them.

Last week, he took on hit indie game Minecraft and while I referred to it as possibly the best review ever, he may have topped himself in this latest bit where he travels to Whiterun in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

While creating his Khajiit character, Mr. Buttons, Conan hilariously pointed out the "way too many choices" available in the game.

"For a few minutes there we were in a wonderful, new world and now I'm doing my taxes," he joked.

It's just one of the many jokes you'll see as he journeys to Skyrim and attempts to find a local female merchant a mammoth's tusk in attempt to woo her.

Campcom fighting games need to be 'more accessible' says US VP

Capcom has crafted a library of excellent games, headlined by several fighting game franchises. From Street Fighter to Tekken, and everywhere in between, such as Street Fighter x Tekken, fans have spent hours duking it out as their favorite characters in their favorite arenas. According to Capcom’s US VP, though, there is still room for major improvement, especially when it comes to “accessibility” for newcomers to Capcom fighting games.

In a post on Capcom Unity’s forums, vice-president Christian Svensson admitted their development teams need to focus more on teaching the ropes to those unfamiliar with past Capcom fighting titles. He assured fans that the best way to teach was by tutorials, something that fans either love or love to hate.

“[Street Fighter x Tekken] was intended to be a bit more casual friendly and frankly, I think with the introduction of so many new systems (gems, pandora, etc.) I think we probably overcomplicated things and it worked against that objective,” wrote Svensson. “More to the OP's point, I strongly agree that we have not done a good job of truly teaching new players about the basics of fighting game strategy in our current crop of titles. This has been a hot button conversation with the producers in the past and some have embraced it.”

As someone who’s an undoubted “noob” when it comes to fighting games, I’ve noticed that controls are something incredibly difficult to teach, especially when you’re trying to tailor to your hardcore fans. Creating a worthwhile tutorial mode usually gets put on the backburners in the development cycle, but hopefully this will begin to change as Capcom looks to possibly branch out their fighting series’.

Steam users encounter serial key problems with Batman: Arkham Asylum

Steam users who purchased Batman: Arkham Asylum recently were encountering unexpected issues with serial key activation.

Although customers were charged, their game was marked as "not found in the database."

The problem seemed to stem from the DRM service SecuROM, which pops up with a window upon launching the game. Affected customers took to the forums to voice their complaints.

Batman publisher Warner Bros. was "researching the issue," which has now been fixed according to Community Manager Sarah Wellock: "Codes should work for all users."
